We have a lot going on these next two final weeks of our spring study together. Preparing for babies, care packages, departures…and we’ll also unveil what we’ll be studying next fall!
Please read the other messages on the City about items you can bring in for this week. Thanks so much for helping us bless others!
In our book, we will look at the “fruits” of discipline. Instead of focusing on methods behind or reasons for disciplining our children, author Alice Fryling wants us to consider “the heart of right living for those who are trained” according to God’s discipine. (Hebrews 12: 4-13)
Just as we need to discipline our children, God must discipline us. And both are proof of love.
Then, in Titus 2:11-13, we will then look at how grace brings forth benefits of discipline.
Prayerfully consider the qualities of God’s character that you’d like to see in your children. Sometimes discipline is necessary in order to train them on this path—but knowing what God’s discipline looks like helps orient our parenting decisions.
Questions for reflection:
-Are you encouraged, or do you lose heart, when God disciplines you?
-How do you usually respond to painful, unpleasant experiences in your life? In your children’s lives? How far should we protect our children from hardship?
-What attitudes can we cultivate in ourselves and encourage in our children that will help produce righteousness and peace out of discipline and/or times of hardship?
-What are some practical implications of helping our children say no to “ungodliness and worldly passion” and to live with self-control and godliness?
-In your family, do you think your children are more familiar with the experience of discipline or the experience of grace?
We will meet on the 2/F of Island ECC this upcoming Thursday, May 30, from 9:30-11:30. Childcare and refreshments provided. Newcomers welcome!
